Moldova seeks Greek investment to boost economy
President Maia Sandu of Moldova and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece have agreed to boost cooperation between the two countries in several areas, including energy, economy, and tourism.
The two leaders met in Athens on August 22, 2023, on the sidelines of a summit of Western Balkan countries, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Ukraine, and European Union leaders.
Sandu said that Moldova is interested in even closer cooperation with Greece in the energy sector, particularly in the diversification of natural gas supply sources. She noted that Energocom, Moldova's state-owned energy company, has already signed a cooperation agreement with DEPA, Greece's main natural gas supplier.
The two leaders also agreed to work together to open a direct flight between Chisinau, Moldova's capital, and Athens. Sandu said that this would help to boost tourism and trade between the two countries.
In addition, Sandu and Mitsotakis discussed economic cooperation and the possibility of attracting Greek investment in Moldova. Sandu said that Moldova is a "good investment destination" with a young and skilled workforce.
Mitsotakis praised the decision of the Greek authorities to open an embassy in Chisinau and invited Sandu to visit Greece.
The summit in Athens provided a platform to discuss the EU enlargement process. Sandu said that Moldova is committed to joining the European Union and that she hopes to see the country become a member state in the near future.
