Hungarian minister: Russian gas to Hungary could be redirected to TurkStream
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Tuesday that Russian natural gas supplied to Hungary via Ukraine could be redirected to the TurkStream pipeline. The move comes as Ukraine does not intend to renew its agreement with Gazprom from next year.
Szijjarto said the TurkStream pipeline has a capacity of 8.5 billion cubic metres of gas to Hungary and can cover the entire volume of natural gas from Russia. He said the change would not affect Hungarian households, as the country has enough gas reserves to last until the end of the year.
The redirection of Russian gas to Hungary via TurkStream would be a significant shift in the region's energy landscape. Ukraine has been a major transit route for Russian gas to Europe for decades, but the war in Ukraine has put that arrangement in jeopardy.
The redirection of Russian gas to Hungary via TurkStream would also benefit Romania. The TurkStream pipeline crosses Romania, and the increase in gas flow through the pipeline would boost Romania's economy.
