Moldova and Ukraine to boost energy cooperation
Moldova and Ukraine have agreed to deepen their cooperation in the energy sector, Moldovan Energy Minister Victor Parlicov said on Thursday.
The two countries are working to increase the capacity of the Ukraine-Moldova interconnection with the European network ENTSO-E from 1,200 megawatts to 2,000 megawatts. They also plan to develop the Trans-Balkan Corridor (Greece-Bulgaria-Romania-Moldova-Ukraine) and use Ukraine's western gas storage facilities to help ensure reliable gas supplies to Central Europe, particularly during winter peak demand periods.
"We agreed to intensify the dialogue between Moldova, Ukraine, the Secretariat of the Energy Community, the European Commission, and ENTSO-E to accelerate the process of permanently synchronising the Ukrainian and Moldovan power grids with ENTSO-E, with a view to subsequent integration into the common European energy market," Parlicov said.
The officials also agreed to hold a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania in the near future to discuss energy security cooperation.
