Moldova and Romania deepen ties as EU candidacy progresses

The status of Moldova as a candidate country for EU membership is boosting cooperation with Romania, according to the country's ambassador to Bucharest, Victor Chirilă.

In an interview with Radio Moldova, Chirilă said that the two countries are working on a number of bilateral projects, including the construction of bridges, the rehabilitation of roads, and the construction of a high-voltage power line. These projects, he said, will bring Moldova closer to Romania and integrate it economically and infrastructurally into the EU.

Chirilă also said that Romania is providing support to Moldova in meeting the nine conditions set by the European Commission for the start of EU accession negotiations. These conditions include reforms to the judiciary, the fight against corruption, and the improvement of the business climate.

"Romania is always by our side, helping us to promote in the European capitals the progress we are making," Chirilă said.

In addition to cooperation on EU accession, Moldova and Romania are also working together to manage the crises caused by the war in Ukraine. Romania has provided Moldova with humanitarian aid and has helped to evacuate refugees from the war-torn country.
