UK's King Charles III praises Moldova's independence
King Charles III of the United Kingdom has sent a message of support to Moldova on the occasion of its Independence Day.
"I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to the people of Moldova and Your Excellency, Madam President Maia Sandu, on this special day for your country, as you mark Independence Day," the king said in a message. "I look forward to the continued warm friendship and strong partnership between our two countries as we face these challenging times."
In a separate statement, the British Ambassador to Moldova, Steven Fisher, said that Moldova has shown in its 32 years of independence that it does not need anyone to tell it what to do or how to live.
Moldova declared independence from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991, along with other Soviet republics. Romania was the first country to recognize Moldova's independence and sovereignty.
In 1992, Moldova became a member of the United Nations, and in 1995 it joined the Council of Europe.
