Estonian PM Kaja Kallas under pressure to resign over husband's Russia ties
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is facing pressure to resign after reports emerged that her husband owns a stake in a company that has maintained operations in Russia since Moscow invaded Ukraine, Reuters, as cited by Hotnews.ro, reports.
Two major Estonian newspapers have called for her resignation, and two opinion polls have shown that a majority of those polled believe she should resign.
Kallas has said she does not believe her husband's firms have done anything wrong, while her husband has promised to sell his stake in the company.
Kallas, who has urged European companies to cut ties with Moscow, has been a leading critic of Russia in the European Union and NATO and is considered by some to be a potential future secretary-general of the North Atlantic Alliance.
The controversy comes as Estonia is one of the most pro-Western countries in the former Soviet Union. The country has a population of just over 1 million people, but it has volunteered to host a U.S. missile defence base and has been a vocal critic of Russian aggression.
It is unclear whether Kallas will be able to weather the storm and remain in office. However, the scandal has damaged her reputation and raised questions about her judgement.
