Maia Sandu: Moldova has reduced its dependence on Russia for gas

In an interview with CNN, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that the country has become more independent in terms of its energy sector. According to the head of state, Moldova has made significant progress in ensuring energy independence in recent years and no longer depends on a single gas supplier, the Russian company Gazprom.

“We feel that we are more resilient, that we are becoming stronger and stronger. We have done a lot in the past two years. We have become more independent in terms of energy issues. For example, a year ago, we bought 100% of our gas needs from Russia. Today, with the exception of the Transnistrian region, we do not consume any Russian gas. Of course, there is still a lot to be done, but we have managed to defend our democracy and we will continue to fight for our democracy,” said Maia Sandu.

At the beginning of this month, Energocom announced that it had begun preparations for the 2023-2024 heating season. Thus, in the period June-July, 300 million cubic metres of natural gas were purchased for current consumption and storage. These will be stored in Ukraine.

In May, Energocom announced that it had approximately 150 million cubic metres of natural gas in stock out of a total of 600 million purchased in 2022, which represents about 10% of the resources consumed during the cold months of the year.
