Moldova's president vows to complete reforms for EU membership
Moldovan President Maia Sandu said in an interview with CNN that EU membership is the only way to ensure the country's security and democracy. She said that the authorities are working hard to implement the nine conditions set by the European Commission to start accession negotiations. Sandu also stressed that, despite the resistance of the system and corrupt individuals, Moldova will succeed in completing the justice reform.
“We believe that Moldova will be safe and its democracy will be preserved when our country becomes an EU member state. For us, it is very clear that Russia will continue to be a threat, a major source of instability for many years to come. We are working hard to implement the conditions set by the European Commission. We understand that this is a long process. We have internal challenges, but we are very committed. We have full political support for this,” Sandu said.
Moldova is currently awaiting the European Commission's assessment of the fulfilment of the nine conditions set out in the Opinion on granting the status of candidate country for EU membership. The European Commission meeting will be held in October, and the European Council in December. The final decision, which could lead to the launch of accession negotiations for Moldova to the EU, will be announced then.
