Iohannis: Moldova and Ukraine to join the Three Seas Initiative

Moldova and Ukraine will become associated members of the Three Seas Initiative diplomatic format at the September summit, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced today in a speech at the Annual Meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy. At the same time, the official said that the expansion of the Initiative with a new participating state, Greece, is also being considered.

“In the geopolitical context created by the war in Ukraine, the Initiative has gained relevance and I believe that it must become an even more important platform in consolidating regional and European resilience. Without anticipating the decisions that will be taken at the Summit, the expansion of the Initiative with a new participating state, Greece, is also being considered, as well as the granting of the status of associated participating state to Ukraine and Moldova,” said the Romanian President.

Klaus Iohannis will host the eighth edition of the Three Seas Initiative Summit on September 6 at the Cotroceni Palace.

The format aims to increase connectivity in the region in the fields of energy, transport, and digital, targeting new investments, economic growth, and energy security.

The Three Seas Initiative now brings together 12 states located geographically between the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, and the Adriatic Sea: Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
