Moldova secures eight European gas suppliers
Eight European companies will participate in tenders to be held by Energocom, the Moldovan state-owned energy company, to purchase natural gas for the first quarter of 2024. The companies were selected from a pool of 11 that submitted applications.
The tenders are being held to ensure the country's gas supply amid the war in Ukraine. To help Moldova build up its strategic gas reserves and reduce the risk of supply disruptions, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided Energocom with a loan of €300 million in two tranches. The loan was used last year and has already been repaid in full.
The €300 million loan, which was contracted for the "Security of Natural Gas Supply" project, was used by Energocom from October 17, 2022, to January 10, 2023, to diversify its gas supply sources and build up strategic reserves.
The €200 million tranche of the loan from the EBRD was accessed earlier this year and was due to mature in October. It was repaid ahead of schedule on August 7.
