U.S., allies hit North Korea with new sanctions

The United States imposed sanctions, including the freezing of assets of two individuals and an entity, in response to North Korea's failed attempt to launch a military satellite last week, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced Thursday, Agerpres cited Kyodo News.

The punitive measures, which target two individuals, a North Korean and a Russian, as well as a Russian company, are aimed at combating efforts to generate revenue for North Korea's "illegal development of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles."

The U.S. Department of the Treasury said that Washington took the measures in coordination with Japan and South Korea.

On August 24, North Korea launched a rocket carrying a reconnaissance satellite, but it failed to enter orbit due to a malfunction in the explosive system, marking the second failed attempt by Pyongyang in three months.
