The deadline to register is September 30th.

The main goal of the scheme is to raise funds for NGOs, which can then use the money to support a variety of public interest initiatives, such as social services, environmental protection, and cultural preservation.

"In addition, the 2% mechanism is a tool of participatory democracy," the ASP said in a statement. "By making a percentage designation, individuals are actually participating in the process of allocating public resources."

In the 1990s and 2000s, several countries in Central and Eastern Europe introduced similar mechanisms that allow citizens to donate a portion of their income tax to the non-profit sector.

In Moldova, the percentage designation, or "Law 2%," was enacted on January 1, 2017.
