Global Fund helps Moldova reduce tuberculosis cases
The number of tuberculosis cases in Moldova has been declining after the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Dumitru Latichevschi, regional manager for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
In 2003, when the Global Fund began its operations in Moldova, there were over 8,000 cases of tuberculosis reported. As of today, the number of cases is around 2,000.
"The concentration of tuberculosis is high in prisons, and transmission is favored by the density of people in these institutions," Latichevschi said. "However, the positive aspect is that prisons are very active in detecting tuberculosis. The medical service of prisons is actually a filter for tuberculosis."
The Global Fund is the main donor in the fight against tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS in Moldova. As of today, the country benefits from a consolidated country grant from the Global Fund, worth over €18 million, for the period 2021-2023.
