“In the face of danger, calamities, and emergencies, we rely on our soldiers with confidence. The crises of recent years and the ruthless war next door have reminded us that the safety of our citizens depends on the good training and equipment of the National Army,” Sandu said on a social media platform.

The president also said that the government is working to “compensate for the period of neglect of the defence sector.”

“This year, through the mobilisation of internal resources and with the assistance of strategic partners, we have achieved a significant increase in budgetary allocations for the modernization of the defence sector. Soldiers and civilian employees of the National Army must have good living and working conditions, modern equipment, and quality training,” she said.

Sandu also praised the Moldovan military for their contributions to peacekeeping and security outside the country.

“Thanks to the professionalism and training of our officers, in 2023, we deployed the first peacekeeping contingent in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. For almost 10 years, we have been sending soldiers to the KFOR peacekeeping missions in Kosovo. In addition, Moldovan sappers have trained Ukrainian sappers on how to clear land mines laid by Russian aggressors. In all these demanding missions, our defenders represent us with dignity and contribute to the country’s positive image,” Sandu said.

This year, the National Army Day is celebrated on September 3.
