Moldova to ease access for Ukrainian refugee children to schools

The Moldovan Ministry of Education and Research announced that it will approve a new regulation next week to facilitate the enrollment of Ukrainian refugees in the country's schools.

The regulation will remove some restrictions on the temporary protection status of Ukrainian refugees, including the requirement that they have a residence permit. It will also provide funding for schools to provide additional support to Ukrainian students, such as language instruction and psychosocial support.

According to Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun, there are an estimated 20,000 Ukrainian refugee children of school age in Moldova. However, only about 1,000 of these children are currently enrolled in Moldovan schools. The rest are attending online classes or receiving no education at all.

"We are committed to ensuring that all Ukrainian refugee children have access to quality education," Perciun said. "With the help of our partners, we will address the challenges they face, including language barriers and the need for psychosocial support."

The new regulation is part of a broader effort by Moldova to support Ukrainian refugees. The country has already provided shelter, food, and medical care to more than 400,000 refugees.

According to the Ministry of Education and Research, at the end of the 2022-2023 school year, over 1,000 Ukrainian refugees were studying in schools in our country.
