Transgaz to take over Moldova's natural gas transport system

Transgaz, the Romanian national natural gas transport company, is on track to take over the entire natural gas transport system in Moldova, including the breakaway region of Transnistria, Gându reports.

The announcement was made by Transgaz CEO Ion Sterian, who said that the two companies have reached an agreement in principle and are working to finalise the details.

Under the agreement, Vestmoldtransgaz, a subsidiary of Transgaz, will take over the assets and operations of Moldovagaz, which is majority-owned by Gazprom.

The transfer is expected to be completed on September 19, 2023.

The agreement is a significant step forward for Moldova in its efforts to integrate with the European Union.

The European Union requires that natural gas transport systems be separated from vertically integrated companies in order to ensure the security of supply and competition.

Transgaz was selected to take over Moldova's natural gas transport system after it successfully completed a certification process in 2021.

The company has a strong track record of operating natural gas transport systems and is well-positioned to ensure the continued supply of natural gas to Moldova.
