Gagauz prosecutor's office opens case against elected leader

The prosecutor's office of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, a semi-autonomous region within Moldova, has opened a case against the region's elected leader, Evghenia Guțul.

Guțul, who had close relations with the banned ȘOR Party, is accused of abuse of office. She is alleged to have used her position to benefit the party.

Guțul's lawyer, Aureliu Colenco, has accused the authorities of political persecution. He said that the case was politically motivated and that the prosecutor's office was acting on the orders of the central government in Chișinău.

The prosecutor's office said that it would investigate the allegations and that it would take all necessary steps to establish the truth.
