Maia Sandu to attend Three Seas Initiative Summit in Bucharest
Maia Sandu, president of Moldova, will travel to Bucharest, Romania, on Wednesday to attend the third Three Seas Initiative Summit, to be hosted by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
The summit will bring together representatives from all 12 member states of the Three Seas Initiative (I3M), as well as strategic partners including the United States, the European Commission, and Germany.
Sandu is expected to meet with other European leaders to discuss investments in infrastructure projects that will connect Moldova to the European Union.
In a statement, the Romanian presidency said the summit will focus on the results of Romania's presidency of the I3M (June 2022-September 2023), which will be reflected in a joint declaration to be adopted at the end of the meeting.
"This will be an important milestone for the I3M's future activities, which will focus on developing cross-border infrastructure in the areas of transport, energy, and digitalization, as well as strengthening and diversifying the Initiative's financial instruments," the statement said.
The declaration will also mark the accession of Greece as the 13th member of the I3M, and the granting of associate membership status to Ukraine and Moldova.
The Three Seas Initiative is a flexible and informal political platform, at the presidential level, that brings together the 12 EU member states located between the Adriatic, Baltic, and Black Seas. Its goals are to promote economic development, increase European cohesion, and strengthen transatlantic ties.
Previous Three Seas Initiative Summits have been held in Dubrovnik, Croatia (2016), Warsaw, Poland (2017), Bucharest, Romania (2018), Brdo and Ljubljana, Slovenia (2019), Tallinn, Estonia (2020), and Sofia, Bulgaria (2021). Latvia hosted the 2022 summit and business forum.
