Moldova to introduce new ID cards by 2025
The government of the Republic of Moldova is planning to introduce new identity cards that meet European standards by 2025. A draft resolution to this effect was discussed at a meeting of the government's secretariat generals.
The move comes as the country prepares to join the European Union. As part of its association agreement with the bloc, Moldova has committed to harmonising its legislation with EU standards.
The new ID cards will be more secure than the current ones, featuring facial images, two fingerprints, an electronic signature, and multiple public certificates, as required by the 2019 EU Regulation.
They will also no longer contain information about citizens' place of residence, as this information will be stored electronically. Additionally, the wet stamp that is currently applied to ID cards on election day will be phased out in favour of electronic records.
The current ID cards will remain valid until the first EU-compliant cards are issued.
The draft law is currently under public consultation.
