Security concerns as 30,000 Hasidic Jews cross Moldova
Moldova will facilitate the transit of an estimated 30,000 Hasidic Jews between September 11 and 22, as they travel to the Ukrainian city of Uman to mark the Jewish New Year at the grave of a revered rabbi. In this regard, national security institutions will implement special measures, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
As a result, activity will be increased at Chisinau International Airport and at border crossing points with Ukraine, in order to facilitate passenger traffic and mitigate security risks.
"Starting September 11, 2023, air passengers are urged to arrive at Chisinau International Airport with plenty of time. Access will be restricted to airport staff and passengers with airline tickets. Entry to the airport will be allowed only upon presentation of a travel document, which will be checked by airport officials. After this procedure, the passenger will continue with check-in, then proceed to security, document, and customs control, followed by waiting for their flight in the sterile area," according to a statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In addition, police teams will be deployed on national roads leading to Moldova-Ukraine border crossing points to ensure smooth traffic flow and avoid congestion.
It is also possible that the increased number of travellers to Ukraine could lead to longer processing times at border crossing points.
