Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on September 9 that his country "does not recognize and will never recognize the results of these sham elections or Russia's illegal attempt to annex Ukraine."

Trudeau said the elections were "serious violations of international law, including the UN Charter."

Moldova's foreign ministry also condemned the elections, saying they were "illegal and in total contradiction with the provisions of international law and international treaties to which Russia is a party."

The elections, which began on August 31 and are scheduled to end on September 10, are taking place in the Zaporizhzhya, Kherson, Luhansk and Donetsk regions, which are only partially controlled by Russia.

The elections are seen as a Russian attempt to legitimise its control over the occupied territories and lay the groundwork for annexation.
