Correspondence from Brussels// Russia's war against Ukraine: 4 million refugees under EU protection
As of 31 July 2023, more than 4.1 million non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine following the Russian invasion of 24 February 2022 had temporary protection status in EU countries.

According to the latest report by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, the main EU countries hosting beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine were Germany (1,153,865 people; 28% of the total), Poland (971,080; 24%) and the Czech Republic (357,540 ; 9%).
Romania received 135,485, while Hungary received only 32,000.
Compared to the population of each EU member, the highest number of beneficiaries of temporary protection per thousand people at the end of July 2023 was registered in the Czech Republic (33.0), Poland (26.4), Estonia (25.9 ), Bulgaria (25.3) and Lithuania. (25.0), while the corresponding figure at EU level was equal to 9.2 per thousand inhabitants.
As of July 31, 2023, Ukrainian citizens made up more than 98% of temporary protection beneficiaries. Adult women represented almost half (46.6%) of the beneficiaries. Children accounted for slightly more than a third (34.2%), while adult men were less than a fifth (19.2%) of the total.
