Government aims to boost Moldova's dairy sector

Moldova's domestic market is facing a milk deficit, with the population consuming 568,000 tons of milk per year, while local farms produce only 30,000 tons, Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Vladimir Bolea said on TV8.

The minister said that the government is committed to developing the dairy sector.

"We are a milk-importing country. The goal of the Ministry of Agriculture is to reach 20,000 milking cows in farms by 2025, which will produce at least 160,000 litres of milk each. This would ensure that 40% of Moldova's domestic milk consumption is met by domestic production," Bolea said.

Currently, there are 14,000 milking cows in Moldovan farms, while about 50,000 are kept in private households. The country imports significant quantities of milk from Poland, Romania, and Ukraine.
