Moldova's independence from Russia grows
Moldovan authorities say they are prepared for a possible disconnection from Russian natural gas, according to Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
In an interview with Jurnal TV, Recean said that Moldova has never been more energy independent from Russia than it is now.
"Yes, it was very expensive, and it did not look very good politically, but it took determination, integrity, and clear decisions for things to happen," Recean said. "We have never been better prepared for the winter, we have never been more energy independent from Russia and Transnistria. Now we have this independence. We are making reserves of natural gas, we will continue, and accordingly, we will be able to reduce the tariff when we replenish the deposits with cheaper natural gas."
Recean also noted that a new contract has been signed for the supply of electricity to Moldova. The new contract is for a longer term and has a lower tariff.
