Moldova: Peaceful reintegration of Transnistria will happen before or after EU accession

The peaceful reintegration of the Transnistrian region will take place either by or after Moldova's accession to the European Union, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Zaharov wrote on his Facebook page.

According to him, the authorities want to join the European community as a reintegrated country. Igor Zaharov added that it would be irresponsible to make our timetable for accession to the EU bloc dependent on developments in the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and the wishes of separatist leaders on the left bank of the Dniester.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that Moldova's national priority is to join the EU by 2030.

The Republic of Moldova is currently awaiting the European Commission's assessment of the fulfilment of the nine conditions laid down in the Opinion on granting the status of candidate country for accession to the EU bloc. The European Commission will meet in October and the European Council in December. The final decision will then be announced, which could mean the launch of negotiations for Moldova's accession to the European Union.
