Last week, media reports emerged that Muntean was the subject of a corruption case, despite having passed the Pre-Vetting Commission. He has said that the case is actually a fabrication ordered by former PDM leader Vladimir Plahotniuc.

On the other hand, the Pre-Vetting Commission has claimed that it was not provided with information about any investigations or criminal proceedings involving Muntean, a claim denied by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and the National Anti-Corruption Center.

After being urged to resign by several officials, including the Minister of Justice, Muntean wrote on his Facebook page that he could step down from the CSM in order to avoid compromising the Council's work.
