CEC announces new gender quota for local elections in Moldova

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced that parties that intend to participate in the 2023 local elections must comply with a minimum 40% gender quota for both sexes. The quota applies to all candidates for local councils, including district and municipal councils.

In addition, the CEC has said that candidates must be placed on lists in a way that ensures at least four candidates of each sex for every ten positions.

The CEC has warned that parties that fail to comply with these requirements will have their candidate lists rejected.

The registration period for candidates for second-level constituencies began on September 19, 2023. The designation of candidates for first-level constituencies will begin on September 26, 2023, and their registration will begin on September 29, 2023.
