Maia Sandu vows to push for electronic case registry

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said on Monday that she will continue to push for the creation of an electronic case registry at the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and the National Anticorruption Center. She also said that the Pre-Vetting Commission will continue its work despite criticism and resistance.

Sandu’s comments came in an interview with TV8, in the context of the scandal surrounding new CSM member Iulian Muntean, who was found to be under investigation in a corruption case from 2018, despite having previously been promoted by the Pre-Vetting Commission.

“If there was no record of this person in the registry, then there are no records of others either,” Sandu said. “How did we find out about this case, even though most people in the system knew that the Commission would be examining his candidacy? They waited, and then two weeks later: ‘Good morning, here is this document.’ But where was this document before? Why wasn’t it registered normally? I consider and will insist on an electronic registry, so that we don’t see anything like this again. Because this means that prosecutors can open a case, they can keep it open for ten years, they can blackmail.”

Sandu also said that the Pre-Vetting Commission will continue its work, despite the difficulties and resistance it faces.

“I know that most prosecutors do not want this integrity assessment, I know, we all know that judges do not want the integrity assessment,” Sandu said. “But they have not been able to clean themselves up in the past three years, so we will continue. Whether they like it or not, there are no other methods. I know that there are many who criticise this integrity assessment, but they do not propose anything in return. That is why we will continue.”
