Moldova's Renaissance Party accuses government of rights abuses
The Renaissance Party will send a letter to foreign missions accredited in Moldova to express concern about the systematic violation of civil and political rights and the intimidation of the opposition, the party's spokesperson Olesea Vitneanskaia said on Tuesday.
"The continuous state of emergency is limiting citizens, but expanding the possibilities of the governing structures," Vitneanskaia said. "All of this contributes to the increase of social tension and destabilisation of the situation in the country. The country is undergoing a systematic cleansing of the information field, and the principles of democratic political struggle are being trampled on."
Vitneanskaia's comments come after two members of the Renaissance Party, Irina Lozovan and Alexandr Nesterovschi, were stripped of their parliamentary immunity on September 21. The two are accused of accepting funding from an organised criminal group, according to the General Prosecutor's Office.
Lozovan and Nesterovschi were detained and placed under pre-trial arrest for 30 days.
