Ciolacu told Digi24 television on September 29 that Romania's transport minister has been in talks with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which is the majority shareholder in the port.

"There is a smaller port in Moldova that is not yet operational, and Romania has already expressed its interest to the EBRD to buy it and develop it," Ciolacu said.

The Giurgiulesti port is a key transit point for goods between Europe and Asia. It is located on the Danube River, which connects to the Black Sea.

The EBRD acquired the Giurgiulesti port in 2021.

In a related development, Moldova's Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Andrei Spînu, presented a project to develop the Giurgiulesti state port. The project includes construction, infrastructure, and equipment. Spînu said the port could be operational by 2028.
