Moldova joins EU Civil Protection Mechanism

Moldova has become a member of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, which will allow Moldovan rescuers and firefighters to receive assistance from their European colleagues in the event of disasters such as fires, earthquakes, or floods.

The agreement was signed today by Moldova's Minister of Internal Affairs, Adrian Efros, and European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič.

"In times of trouble, disasters, not only Moldovan rescuers and firefighters will be involved in interventions, but also rescuers from the European Union," said Adrian Efros. "The injured and displaced people will be treated in EU hospitals. In the event of earthquakes, fires, or floods, thousands of hands will be alongside us to help save human lives or property in citizens' households."

European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič stressed that, thanks to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Moldova has received assistance in managing the refugee crisis from 20 European countries since the start of the war in Ukraine.

The European official also noted that, through this mechanism, most hospitals in Moldova have received generators.
