A million people demonstrated in Warsaw
Two weeks before the parliamentary elections in Poland, about a million people demonstrated in Warsaw on Sunday against the policies of the right-wing nationalist ruling party PiS. This is the largest demonstration in the capital’s history, according to a spokeswoman for the city government, writes Today Times.
She spoke to the portal Onet.pl. even by about a million people; the number of participants was originally set at 100,000. They marched close through the center of the Polish capital. The demonstrators carried signs that read “We have had enough and want change” and “Together we have strength.”
The liberal-conservative Citizens Coalition (KO), which emerged from opposition leader Donald Tusk’s former ruling party Citizens Platform, called for the “March of a Million Hearts”. The demonstration is also supported by the left-wing Lewica alliance. “Nothing can stop this power,” Tusk said. “No one in positions of power above should harbor any illusions. This change is inevitable.” He spoke to almost a million participants at the start of the event, news agency PAP reported, citing unofficial information from police that there were almost 100,000 demonstrators.
Poland will elect a new parliament on October 15. In all surveys to date, the national conservative PiS (Law and Justice), which has been in power since 2015, leads by a clear margin. However, it could need a coalition partner to form a government – and we find that in the ultra-right Konfederacja.
