EU Parliament's decision on Moldova, Ukraine accession talks uncertain
The European Parliament's decision on whether to launch accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine by the end of this year is a political one, said EU lawmaker Dacian Cioloș in an interview with Radio Moldova.
Cioloș said that Hungary is likely to oppose the launch of talks with Ukraine, which could also affect the resolution for Moldova. He also warned that other countries could surprise the EU with their positions.
"We would like to affect the interests of Moldova through ricochet with these exaggerated demands towards Ukraine, because even if formally the two countries, Ukraine and Moldova, are treated and should be treated separately based on their merits, I believe that it will be difficult to separate Ukraine from Moldova from a political point of view, even if Moldova is probably more advanced than Ukraine in the reforms that have been made," Cioloș said.
The European Parliament is expected to vote on a resolution on launching accession talks with Moldova today. The European Commission will then issue its opinion, and a final decision will be taken at the European Council summit in December.
