Moldova's President Maia Sandu makes historic visit to Portugal
President Maia Sandu of Moldova paid a historic visit to Portugal on Tuesday, marking the first time a Moldovan head of state has visited the country.
Sandu was welcomed with full honours at the Belém Palace in Lisbon by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The two leaders held a meeting and a joint press conference, where they discussed a range of issues, including bilateral cooperation, the war in Ukraine, and Moldova's bid to join the European Union.
Sandu said that the visit marks a new stage in the bilateral relationship between Moldova and Portugal. She noted that the two countries have strong economic ties, with Portuguese companies investing in Moldova's wine industry and other sectors. She also said that the two countries share a commitment to democracy and human rights.
Rebelo de Sousa said that Portugal is committed to supporting Moldova's European integration. He said that Portugal will continue to work with Moldova to meet the conditions for EU membership.
Sandu also met with Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa and other government officials. She also met with members of the Moldovan community in Portugal.
