Moldova's Parliament to adopt new regulations to prevent fraud in local elections
Moldova's Parliament President Igor Grosu has announced that the legislature will adopt new regulations to prevent people with a criminal record or who are under international sanctions from running for office in the upcoming local elections.
The announcement comes after the Constitutional Court ruled on Tuesday that a provision of the law on political parties that barred members of the former Shor Party, which was outlawed, from running for office, is unconstitutional.
Grosu said that the new regulations will be based on the court's decision and the recommendations of the Venice Commission. They will establish criteria for disqualifying candidates, as well as a process for challenging decisions by the electoral authorities.
"The Parliament is obliged to comply with the decision of the Constitutional Court," Grosu said. "We will adopt new regulations that will ensure that only people who are eligible to run for office can do so."
The new regulations are expected to be adopted by Parliament on Wednesday.
