Moldova to rehabilitate 450-kilometre railway corridor with EBRD funding

The Moldovan government has approved the ratification of an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to finance the rehabilitation of a 450-kilometre railway corridor in the country.

The corridor, which runs from Valcinet to Ocnita to Balti to Ungheni to Chișinău to Căinari, is in need of repair due to damage from years of neglect. The rehabilitation project will improve safety, increase speed, and reduce travel time for passenger and freight trains.

"This is a major step forward for Moldova's transport infrastructure," said Andrei Spînu, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development. "The rehabilitation of this corridor will make it safer and more efficient, and will help to boost economic growth."

The EBRD will provide a loan of 23 million euros to finance the project. The funds will be used to replace sleepers, rails, and ballast on the most critical sections of the corridor.
