Moldova's wine industry booming, exports up 34%
Moldovan President Maia Sandu declared that the country's wine industry is booming, with exports up 34% in the first seven months of 2023.
Sandu said that Moldovan wines are now available in over 75 countries, and that exports to the European Union have increased fivefold since 2012.
"Our wine is conquering the world," Sandu said. "This year's slogan reflects one of the best news for our winemakers. Only in the first seven months of this year, exports increased by 34%, and our wines reached over 75 countries. I am convinced that our producers will be able to enter other markets as well. I want to assure you that you will benefit from the support of the institutions responsible for promoting this branch, which is so important for our economy."
Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Vladimir Bolea said that winemaking technology in Moldova has undergone a major transformation in the past 10 years.
"Moldova is one of the 20 countries in the world that is recognized as a producer of quality wine," Bolea said. "We rank 14th in the world as an exporting country. Our country has the highest density of vineyards, given our surface area and population. We have 68 wineries registered in the Viticultural Registry, we have 59,000 hectares registered in the Viticultural Registry of technical and table grape varieties, we have 1,690 hectares of native varieties, of which 1,140 hectares are Moldovan selection varieties."
To mark the National Wine Day, Bolea announced that a decision has been made to organize the largest congress of all winemakers and viticulturists in Moldova in 2025.
The 2023 edition of the National Wine Day will bring together about 100 winemakers, united under the umbrella of the country's wine brand "Our wine is conquering the world." The event takes place on October 7-8 in the Great National Assembly Square.
