At least 40 killed in Israel as Hamas launches offensive
At least 40 people were killed in Israel on Saturday as the Hamas militant group launched a major offensive, firing rockets and infiltrating armed militants into Israeli towns and villages, according to Israeli rescue services.
The Magen David Adom emergency services said that at least 779 people were injured and taken to hospitals.
In response, Israel launched airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, killing at least nine people, according to AFP journalists.
Palestinian sources quoted by EFE said that at least 50 people were being held hostage by Palestinian militants who had infiltrated Israel.
The Israeli military declared a state of war in response to the attacks. Hamas' armed wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, had earlier announced the launch of an operation against Israel called "Al-Aqsa Flood."
