UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to "redouble its efforts to avoid an escalation of the conflict" and called for "maximum restraint" from all sides.

"Violence will not solve the conflict, only a negotiated solution that leads to a two-state solution can bring peace," Guterres said in a statement.

An emergency meeting of the Israeli cabinet will also be held on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said.

The violence began on Saturday when Hamas launched a surprise military offensive against Israel, firing thousands of rockets and infiltrating militants into the country. Israel responded with airstrikes on Gaza, killing at least 160 people, according to Al Jazeera.
