CEC: Electoral candidates must suspend their activity during the electoral campaign

Electoral contestants who fall under the provisions of art. 16 para. (3) of the Electoral Code must suspend their activity from the position they hold, from the moment the electoral campaign begins, informs the Central Electoral Commission.

CEC draws the attention of candidates registered for the position of local councilor and/or for the position of mayor, who fall under the provisions of art. 16 para. (3) of the Electoral Code, that, from the moment the electoral campaign begins, they must suspend their activity from the position they hold.

According to the CEC, these persons are obliged to comply with the legal regime of conflicts of interest, incompatibilities, as well as other restrictions and limitations provided by special legal rules, including for the purpose of preventing the illicit use of administrative resources during the electoral period.

If the electoral body finds that the candidate who has this obligation has not been suspended from office, the decision cancels the registration of the electoral competitor, of the independent candidate or excludes the respective candidate from the list of electoral competitors, reads the CEC.
