The competition for the selection of a new general prosecutor of the Republic of Moldova will be announced soon
In the next two weeks, the competition for the selection of a new general prosecutor could be announced, said Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru during the program "La 360 de grade" on Radio Moldova. After all the legal procedures, at least in December or January next year we could have a new head of the General Prosecutor's Office.
"We are going to adjust the Regulation regarding the election of the general prosecutor, because in the meantime there were several changes in the law regarding the prosecutor's office, but we hope that in the next two weeks the date of the competition will be announced. This means that a deadline for submitting the file will be announced, around 30 days, after which a pre-selection will take place, and already, last but not least, the candidates for prosecutor general will have to pass the vetting"*, explained the minister
We remind you that on September 26, the head of state Maia Sandu signed the decree releasing Alexandr Stoianoglo from the position of general prosecutor, based on the decision of a decision of the Superior Council of Prosecutors of May 23, 2022. Then, the lawyer of the ex-prosecutor general, Vasile Gafton, told Radio Moldova that the decree will be contested in court.
On May 23, the Supreme Council of Prosecutors (CSP) proposed to President Maia Sandu the revocation of the suspended general prosecutor Alexandr Stoianoglo, after a special commission rated his activity as "unsatisfactory". Stoianoglo scored 2.19 points. According to the law "On the Prosecutor's Office", such an assessment can be a reason for revocation.
The commission evaluated Alexandr Stoianoglo's work according to eight criteria. It received the highest score for "quality of planning of the Prosecutor's Office" - 5.81 points, and the lowest score "4.51" - for "institutional efficiency and contribution to the improvement/decrease of trust in the Prosecutor's Office".
We remind you that on October 5, 2021, Alexandr Stoianoglo was detained being investigated for passive corruption, false statements, abuse of office and abuse of office. On April 23, he was indicted for illicit enrichment. Alexandr Stoianoglo has not pleaded guilty, and his lawyers have filed several complaints with the ECHR.
