Moldova's new national security strategy focuses on defense, reintegration, and corruption
Moldovan President Maia Sandu presented a new National Security Strategy on October 11, 2023. The strategy, which was approved by the Supreme Security Council, outlines five key areas of focus:
- Consolidating the defence sector
- Resolving the Transnistrian conflict peacefully
- Developing international security partnerships
- Fighting corruption
- Contributing to regional and international security
Sandu said that the strategy is designed to address the two main threats to Moldova's security: the aggressive policies of the Russian Federation and the entrenched corruption in the country.
"The first direction is to increase investment and strengthen the national defense and security sector," Sandu said. "The security budget must be increased. The second direction is to gradually advance on the path to resolving the Transnistrian conflict. The Russian troops illegally in our country must leave the sovereign territory of Moldova. The third direction is to be part of and develop security partnerships with the most developed and prosperous democratic countries. The fourth direction of action is to intensify the fight against corruption. The fifth direction of action is to contribute to regional and international security."
"The most important action is to resolve the Transnistrian conflict peacefully," said Alexandru Flenchea, a security expert. "The message sent by the head of state reveals that the European future of Moldova and the reintegration of the country are two correlated processes that must reach a conclusion. The value and content of these actions must be analyzed and discussed at public consultations."
Flenchea noted that the strategy will need to be implemented effectively in order to be successful.
