Germany approves use of Israeli combat drones in Gaza
Germany has approved the use of two Israeli combat drones by Israel in its ongoing counter-offensive against the Palestinian militant group Hamas, the German Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday, Agerpres.ro reports.
"Israel submitted a request to the federal government for support for the use of up to two Heron TP drones," the ministry said in a statement. "The Defense Ministry has approved the use in accordance with the request."
According to the German magazine Spiegel, the Israeli Air Force asked Germany at the weekend if it could make the two Israeli-made drones available for the military response against Hamas.
"The German military currently leases five drones of this type, which are used primarily for the training of German soldiers," the ministry said.
According to Spiegel, Israel suspended the training of 16 German pilots last weekend due to the Hamas attack, and they will soon return to Germany.
The acquisition of equipment to arm these drones was approved last year by Berlin after much debate within the German political class.
