Siegfried Mureșan: "If the reforms continue at the same pace, the Republic of Moldova could join the European Union in a few years"
If the reforms continue at the same pace as before, the Republic of Moldova could join the European Union in a few years. The statement was made in an interview for the Public Broadcaster “Teleradio – Moldova” by Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan.
"It took us four months to grant the Republic of Moldova the status of a candidate state since they submitted their application for accession, while in other states in Central and Eastern Europe, including Romania, that stage took years days, so it moved us quickly. Everything will depend on the pace of reforms in Chisinau. If the Republic of Moldova continues to have a good leader, I believe that accession in a few years is possible. But, we have to be honest, it also depends on the evolution of the situation in Ukraine. As I said, I think it would not be good to speculate on the data", said Siegfried Mureșan.
We remind that most experts estimate that the Republic of Moldova could enter the EU, at best, after 2030.
Our country obtained the status of a candidate state for accession to the European Union in June 2022. At that time, the authorities in Chisinau commited to fulfill a series of conditions for the EU bloc to start accession negotiations.
We remind you that, last week, the European Parliament adopted with a large majority of votes a Resolution by which it recommends starting the accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union by the end of this year. Currently, our country is waiting for the evaluation by the European Commission, which will meet in October, and in December the European Council will announce the final decision.
