Moldova appoints former interior minister to lead new disinformation centre

Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Monday nominated Ana Revenco to lead the country's new Center for Strategic Communication and Disinformation Prevention, a government agency tasked with combating the spread of false information and propaganda.

Revenco, a former interior minister and national security adviser, has a long history of working on issues related to disinformation and national security. She is currently the executive director of the La Strada International Moldova Center, an NGO that works to combat violence against women and girls.

"I am confident that Ana Revenco has the skills and experience necessary to lead this important new institution," Sandu said in a statement. "She is a dedicated public servant with a deep understanding of the challenges posed by disinformation."

The Center for Strategic Communication and Disinformation Prevention was established by the Moldovan government in July 2023 in response to the growing threat of disinformation and propaganda. The agency will work to coordinate the efforts of government, civil society, and the private sector to combat the spread of false information.

Revenco's nomination is expected to be approved by the Moldovan Parliament. If confirmed, she will become the first director of the new agency.
