UN: The number of civilians killed since the beginning of the war in Ukraine is 18 thousand

About 18 thousand Ukrainian civilians have become victims of the war in Ukraine in the last 10 months according to a report by the United Nations (UN). The most casualties were recorded in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

From February 24, when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of the neighboring country, to December 26, 17,831 civilian casualties were recorded in Ukraine, of which 6,884 died and 10,947 civilians were injured. Among those killed were 429 children, the United Nations said in a statement released Tuesday night. The most affected area was Donbas, which includes the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. The majority of recorded civilian casualties were caused by explosive weaponry including heavy artillery bombardment, multiple rocket launchers, missile strikes and air raids. According to Agerpres, Russian forces have indiscriminately bombed populated areas, killing civilians and destroying hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure, and in recent months, Moscow has destroyed part of its energy infrastructure.
