Germany is sending Eurofighter jets to Romania to support NATO's air policing mission
Germany will send four Eurofighter planes to Romania to support NATO's air police mission starting at the end of November, the decision comes a few weeks after the Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube, reports Hotnews.ro.
The attacks, carried out right near the border with Romania, and drone debris found in Romania have increased security risks for the military alliance whose members have a mutual defense commitment.
In September, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg described Russian strikes near the border as "destabilizing," even though there was no indication that Russia intended to strike a NATO member.
The security source said that the first of up to 80 German soldiers who will be housed at a military base near Constanța will leave for Romania on Thursday.
The German air force has in the past supported NATO's air policing mission in Romania.
The alliance strengthened its military presence along the eastern flank after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
