President Maia Sandu calls on the EU member states to support the accession of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to the EU bloc
Head of State Maia Sandu called on all EU member states to unanimously support the opening of EU accession negotiations for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In a press conference held in Kyiv with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, Maia Sandu said that our country is reforming to prepare to be a member of the EU bloc, and the authorities are making efforts to bring the standards and laws at EU level.
"When it comes to EU enlargement, two things are more important than ever: unity and speed. In the face of Russia's "divide and conquer" strategy, our unity is the strongest defense. We must act with one voice, show that our collective will is unshakable. Also, the urgency of our times, marked by war and insecurity, requires us to speed up our processes. Speed and unity are not only strategic choices, but are a matter of survival and a return to stability in Europe", said the president.
According to the leader from Chisinau, another wave of EU expansion represents an investment in the continent's security. "The decision to open accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine as soon as possible is a message that would have been heard not only in Chisinau and Kyiv, but also in Moscow and in all the capitals that show authoritarian or imperial ambitions. It would be a clear message of a confident Europe that defends peace and builds a solid democratic future", said Maia Sandu.
Also, the president, who visited Kiev, urged all countries "that want their borders to be respected" to continue supporting Ukraine until victory.
