Moldova joins Registry to Document Russian War Crimes
In a move to bolster support for Ukraine and hold Russia accountable for its actions, Moldova has officially joined the Partial and Enlarged Agreement on the Registry of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation Against Ukraine. The decision was formally approved by the Moldovan government today.
Mihai Mîtu, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, emphasised the significance of Moldova's participation in this agreement, highlighting its role in documenting and preserving evidence of the damages inflicted by Russia's aggression.
"The registry will serve as a platform for documenting information on evidence, complaints, and claims pertaining to the damage, losses, or injuries caused by the Russian Federation against Ukraine since February 24, 2022, within its internationally recognized borders, extending to its territorial waters," stated Mîtu.
The registry will meticulously process complaints and evidence, determining which cases are eligible for future examination and adjudication. The financial contribution of participating countries is expected to range from 25,000 to 30,000 euros.
The Reykjavik Declaration, adopted at the Council of Europe Summit on May 16-17, 2023, underscored the importance of the Resolution on the Creation of the Partial and Enlarged Agreement on the Registry of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation Against Ukraine. Moldova's accession to this agreement further reinforces its commitment to supporting Ukraine and pursuing accountability for Russia's actions.
