Moldova upgrades rail corridor with EBRD grant
In a significant step towards modernising its transportation network, Moldova has secured a €19.59 million grant from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to repair and modernise the critical Vălcineț-Ocnița-Bălți-Ungheni-Chișinău-Căinari rail corridor. The grant agreement was formally ratified by the Moldovan government today.
The project's primary objective is to replace worn-out sleepers, rails, and ballast along critical sections of the 446-kilometre rail corridor, addressing long standing infrastructure deficiencies. This strategic investment is expected to enhance the corridor's safety, boost passenger and freight train speeds, and optimise train turnaround times.
"The average speed on Moldova's railways is currently 39 kilometres per hour, far below international standards," stated Andrei Spînu, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development. "This grant will enable us to make urgent investments to significantly increase train speeds, particularly for businesses and grain transportation during this crucial period."
The Vălcineț-Ocnița-Bălți-Ungheni-Chișinău-Căinari rail corridor serves as a vital transportation artery for Moldova, connecting the country to its primary trade partners and providing access to essential ports such as Constanța, Galați, Giurgiulești, Reni, and Ismail. The corridor handles the majority of Moldova's imports and exports, making its modernization a strategic priority for the country's economic growth.
